Bible Studies by Dean Courtier

A selection of studies from our 20:20 Bible Study and Discussion Group

There may be times when you find it difficult to reconcile God's truth to your own opinion or worldview, God's truth is eternal, it does not change, our understanding of the truth does change as we allow God to work in our hearts and minds.

These studies are not about opinion, they are about learning truth, the truth contained in the Bible, they focus on how we apply God's truth, black & white in a grey world. To set godly priorities, grow in Christian character and live according to God's standards so that we are a living witness to others.

What does it mean to be Pentecostal?

Biblical Truth

Many people, in some way or another, have a knowledge or understanding of the Bible. People have heard various sermons, in various places, read books, articles, sung some of the great doctrines in Hymn and song - but I would suggest that what we know, or think we know may be tainted by opinions or doctrinal bias from rather than Biblical truth.

The Foundation of Faith

Elim have a set of foundational non-negotiable truths that form the basis of our belief and the purpose of this set of studies it to gain a better understanding of what it mean to be a Pentecostal.

A journey of discovery

As we go on this journey together be willing to allow the Holy Spirit to open your mind and your heart to His prompting and leading. This discussion will focus on what does it mean to be Pentecostal and the discussion will be split into three main areas, What we were? What we are? And What we should be?

The Gospel of Grace

Background

Paul writes to the churches in Galatia because many there are starting to believe false teachers and question what Paul was teaching. In this study we are looking at the beginning of his letter to the Galatians to understand what was going on there and look at the implications for each of us today.

The Gospel message is a message of grace.

Jesus Christ paid for your sins. He died and three days later rose again. He took our punishment and He gave us His righteousness. You didn't deserve it. I don't deserve it. That is grace. He has blessed us with what we do not deserve. That is the good news and this is what Paul was preaching to the Galatians. Then some others came and were saying that Jesus' death and resurrection made it possible to have salvation but first you had to become a Jew and be circumcised. Paul explains that is not the gospel he preached.

What gets us into Heaven?

Believing in Christ and receiving Him as Saviour is the only thing that gets us into heaven, not going to church, not reading the Bible, not doing good things. Don''t misunderstand me - we should be doing those things and as we do them, we grow stronger and glorify God more - but, they will never get us into Heaven.

A New Heaven & A New Earth

Understand what God has prepared

Some people imagine heaven as sitting on a cloud wearing a halo, while little angels play harps as they float through the heavens. Some imagine it as an unending church service, or singing hymns for all eternity. Some think of it as a sort of a celestial retirement city. It all seems like an apparition — so unreal. It's no wonder that some people perceive heaven as a place of numbing boredom, or secretly think to themselves, "Is that all there is?"

Heaven will be relational

If you belong to Christ, you will meet again those you have lost who have known Christ and lived for Him. We will experience relationships at a level we have never known before. Deep, rewarding and fulfilling relationships will be the hallmark of heaven.

What does the Bible say?

There are many things we do not know about what heaven will be like, because it is beyond our ability to comprehend. But one thing we can be sure of is that it will fulfil our greatest longings, it will dazzle us with its beauty, it will obliterate our greatest problems with its power and splendour, it will be greater than anything we could imagine or dream, it will be a place where love and joy will reign unspoiled. God is busy preparing all of this for us.
