Every year, as October draws to a close, many prepare for Halloween - a night filled with costumes, carved pumpkins, and eerie decorations. But as followers of Christ, we must ask ourselves a deeper question: what are we celebrating?
Halloween often glorifies darkness, fear, death, and even the demonic - things Scripture calls us to avoid. Ephesians 5:11 reminds us: "Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them." The world may treat Halloween as harmless fun, but the spiritual reality behind it is not something to ignore.
You see, darkness and light cannot coexist. Jesus declared, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life" (John 8:12, NLT). As Christians, we are called to walk in His light, not to flirt with the shadows.
Rather than decorating our homes with images of fear and death, we can celebrate the One who conquered death! We can use this season to shine the light of Jesus into our communities. Instead of fear, we can share hope. Instead of pretending to be something we're not, we can reveal who we truly are in Christ - redeemed, forgiven, and loved.
Let's make this a time to shine, not hide. Light a candle, display a Scripture, and invite someone to our "Light Party" to point others to Jesus. When others celebrate ghosts, we celebrate grace. When they dwell on darkness, we declare the glory of the risen Saviour.
The enemy wants the world to be comfortable with darkness - but we know that darkness flees when light appears. So let's choose light. Let's choose Jesus. Let's celebrate His victory over sin, death, and the devil.
This October, don't just reject Halloween - redeem it. Be the light that points others to the true Light of the World.
"For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!" (Ephesians 5:8, NLT)
