Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week - the final steps of Jesus' earthly journey before the cross. It's a day filled with paradox: a celebration that leads to a crucifixion, a welcome that becomes rejection, a crowd shouting praise that will soon cry, "Crucify Him!"
As Jesus entered Jerusalem, riding humbly on a donkey, the people welcomed Him with open arms. They waved palm branches, a symbol of victory, and shouted: "Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!" (John 12:13, NLT).
It looked like a royal procession. The crowd saw Jesus as a miracle worker, a prophet, even a political liberator. But they misunderstood what kind of King He truly was.
Jesus fulfilled the prophecy from Zechariah 9:9 (NLT): "Look, your King is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet He is humble, riding on a donkey - riding on a donkey's colt." Not on a war horse. Not with swords and armies. But in peace, with compassion, and divine purpose.
The people celebrated the King they wanted - but they rejected the King they needed.
When Jesus failed to meet their expectations, their cries of "Hosanna!" turned to "Crucify Him!" The One they had honoured, they abandoned. The King they had celebrated, they condemned. Yet through their betrayal, God's eternal plan of salvation marched forward.
Jesus came not to conquer Rome, but to conquer sin and death. Not to rule from a throne in Jerusalem, but from the right hand of God. He was rejected by man, but glorified by the Father. Nailed to a cross, placed in a tomb, but three days later - He rose again!
Palm Sunday reminds us that the King has come - and He is coming again. This time, not on a donkey, but on the clouds of heaven. Not in humility, but in glory. "On His robe at His thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords." (Revelation 19:16, NLT)
So, what should we do in response?
Go! And welcome the King - not just with palm branches, but with surrendered hearts.
Go! And Crown Jesus as King - not only of your lips, but of your life.
Go! And tell others the good news that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Go! And live each day in faithful obedience, awaiting the return of the triumphant King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Go! And welcome the Coming King, He was once rejected - but now reigns victorious forever.
He is the Coming King. Welcomed, rejected, yet forever triumphant.Let every heart prepare Him room. Let every knee bow. Let every tongue confess - Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
