Go! And... Live the New Life

Ephesians 4:17-32 (NLT): With the Lord's authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.

But that isn't what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God - truly righteous and holy.

So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. And "don't sin by letting anger control you." Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

And do not bring sorrow to God's Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Have you ever met someone who says they are a Christian, yet their life looks no different from the world around them? It's like a footballer wearing the team shirt but scoring goals for the opposition.

Paul, writing to the church in Ephesus, challenges us: "Live no longer as the Gentiles do... Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God - truly righteous and holy" (Ephesians 4:17, 23-24 NLT).

The Old Life: Darkness and Deception
Paul describes life without Christ as dark, empty, and confused. The Greek word for "darkened" (skotoo) means blinded or obscured. We see that today - people chasing pleasure, power, or possessions yet never truly satisfied. John Piper put it well: "Sin is what you do when your heart is not satisfied with God."

The New Life: A Spirit-Led Transformation
Becoming a Christian isn't about trying harder - it's about transformation. Paul says to "throw off your old sinful nature" (v.22). The word here means to strip off dirty clothes. And what replaces it? The Spirit renews us daily, shaping us to reflect Jesus. Charles Stanley said, "The Holy Spirit's job is to make you like Jesus, and He will not stop until He's finished."

Living It Out
Paul gives simple but profound examples: stop lying, control your anger, give generously, speak words that build up, forgive as Christ forgave you (vv.25-32). Imagine the difference in our workplaces, homes, and churches if we lived this way.

The Heart of It All: Jesus
None of this is possible without the Gospel. Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't live, died the death our sins deserved, and rose again so we could be made new. Through faith in Him, you are forgiven, restored, and given a new nature.

Your Next Step
What old garment are you still wearing? Bitterness? Gossip? Greed? Jesus offers you a clean heart and a new life. Repent, believe in Him, and start living the life you were created for.

Reflection:
What one area of your life needs to be surrendered to Jesus today so you can live the new life He offers?
