Titus 3:5-6 (NLT): "He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Saviour."
When we think about salvation, it is tempting to believe that God must have seen something good in us - some hidden spark that made us worthy of His love. But Paul reminds Titus, and us, that this is not the case. We were not saved because of our "righteous things." We had none to offer. Our salvation is entirely grounded in God's mercy.
Notice the threefold work of God in these verses:
1. He saved us.
Salvation is not self-help. It is not a moral improvement plan. It is God's rescue mission, reaching down to lost sinners and lifting us up into His family.
2. He washed us.
Through Christ, the stain of sin is cleansed. No matter how deep the guilt or shame, the blood of Jesus washes us white as snow. This is more than forgiveness - it is cleansing, renewal, and restoration.
3. He renewed us.
The Holy Spirit gives us new birth and new life. Christianity is not about trying harder; it is about being made new from the inside out. The Spirit is poured out generously, not sparingly, and through Him we live with power, joy, and assurance.
Charles Spurgeon once said, "Morality may keep you out of jail, but it takes the blood of Jesus Christ to keep you out of hell." Salvation is not earned, it is gifted. It flows from mercy, not merit.
So today, don't rest in your own righteousness. Rest in the mercy of God. Trust in Christ who saved you. Walk in the Spirit who renews you. And rejoice that you are not who you once were - you are a new creation, washed and alive in Him.
